Vinyl Composition Tile referred to as VCT. Customarily VCT is available in twelve or eighteen inch squares, with endless colour options and patterns to choose from. Vinyl composition tiles are inexpensive, virtually indestructible, and easier to install than most other flooring materials. You will find VCT used in most commercial buildings. Schools and grocery stores generally use VCT because of the high traffic levels and the ease of maintenance in these buildings. With our specialty tile removal equipment, our crews can remove large areas of old tile and replace new VCT on your project quickly and efficiently.

Vinyl Composition Tile referred to as VCT is made from polyvinyl esters and inorganic fillers. Polyvinyl esters are manufactured using the same process as used for PVC and is composed of chlorine from common salt and from crude oil. Compared with other types of vinyl flooring, vinyl composition tile (VCT) contains a high proportion of inorganic filler. Fillers increase the dimensional solidity and reduce the elasticity of vinyl flooring. They also improve flame spread rating and reduce smoke generation. Calcium carbonate (limestone) is the preferred filler in vinyl flooring. Talc and clay are rarely used because of the stiffening effect. In the past, asbestos was used as filler.

Some Things You Should Know About VCT:

  • Doesn’t crack like ceramic tile
  • VCT has a low life cycle cost
  • Easy Maintenance
  • Extremely durable
  • Unlimited Colours and Patterns
  • Scuff, burn, dent, and grease resistant

PREPARING FOR VCT INSTALLATION

VCT installation requires a clean, level sub-floor. If the sub-floor has dips, fill them in with levelling compound. Sand down high areas in the sub-floor. If you must remove an old vinyl floor from 1990 or earlier, get it tested for asbestos. If it contains asbestos, it must be professionally removed.

INSTALLATION

VCT installation is similar to that of other floor tiles. Glue the VCT to the sub-floor once it has been properly prepared. There are different types of adhesive; the main difference in each is the amount of time you have to work with it.

CARING FOR VCT

To care for VCT, sweep often and mop the tiles with a mild cleaner as needed. You may have a cleaning service use a floor cleaning and polishing machine on VCT periodically, depending on the traffic and amount of wear. If you have any questions, contact the tile manufacturer for more detailed instructions.

PVC FLOORING

PVC (Plasticized polyvinyl chloride) makes comfortable, safe and stylish floors for buildings of every size and use all over the world and at a price within the reach of millions. These floors are no less than a quiet transformation in the flooring industry. PVC makes a soft and flexible finished product. PVC floor coverings are designed for use in such facilities as hospitals, health-care centres, administration and office buildings, schools, nurseries, as well as commercial, retail and industrial facilities. PVC tiles can handle equipment traffic such as forklifts and are ideal for many industrial/commercial applications. PORCELAIN & CERAMIC TILE

Flooring options have never been more plentiful than they are today. New innovations in tile producing technologies have given new life to porcelain and ceramic floor tiles. From large format porcelain tiles to rustic ceramic tiles, low maintenance and durability accompany each style. Ceramic and porcelain floor tiles share many characteristics. Both are durable and often up to commercial grade in hardness and strength. Both offer ease of cleaning and care, and are available in wide variety of styles, colours and finishes. These tiles can add rich, natural beauty to your flooring and/or bathroom application or design using either glazed ceramic or porcelain tile. No matter your budget or taste, whether designing a “stand-out area” in a church, school or store, these tiles offer an incredible wealth of design options that work together to help create your own inspired, amazing space.

CERAMIC VS. PORCELAIN TILES

CERAMIC TILES are clay-bodied tiles with a glaze baked on the surface. This glaze may contain a pattern, be a solid colour, or have a mottled or marbled appearance. Because of this glaze, the colour of the tile will not go all the way through the clay body. Meaning, that if this tile were to be chipped or cracked, the clay body underneath would show through.

Ceramic tiles can be further broken down into wall or floor tiles. Ceramic floor tiles tend to be thicker than wall tiles, and have a more durable, slip resistant glaze. While ceramic floor tiles can use on walls, it is inadvisable to use wall tiles on the floor.

PORCELAIN TILES are what’s known as a through body material. This means that the colour and patterning of the material goes straight through the clay body. This type of manufacturing makes a harder, more durable tile, and in the event that something was to chip a tile, it would be more difficult to discern the chip, as the colour of the tile would not change.

eramic and Porcelain Tile Advantages:

Classic appearance — tile holds an ancient mystique and today’s tile products perform better than ever

Ease of maintenance — stain-resistant and easily cleaned with sweeping and occasional mopping

Ceramic tile is one of the most long-lasting types of flooring surfaces and great for high-traffic areas

  • Ceramic tile offers nearly unlimited colour choices, textures and finishes to fit any decor from bright to subdued

Why Floor Sanding?

Nothing can compare with the renovated look of your old hardwood flooring or softwood (original pine boards) floors. The authentic feeling of the old, dry timber, gone through the restoration process of the wood floor sanding, cannot be replaced by any type of newly laid solid wood floors or parquet flooring. Whether it is a contemporary urban loft conversion, a Victorian terraced house or country cottage, it is the choice of wood floor restoration, we will always recommend - as the beauty of the old French oak timber, beach, cherry or mahogany, cannot be replaced by anything else.

As a fact, based on estate agents and landlords statistics, properties which have well maintained real wooden floors rather than carpet, vinyl or laminate are more likely to command higher prices.

All Aspects on Wood Floor Fitting
One of the most integral aspects of the wood floor installation is proper subfloor preparation. Before getting down to the Increased Level of Moisture in the Air & Subfloors

wood floor fitting your new floor, there are things that need to be done to ensure proper and long lasting floor installation.

Dust Control

Dust is one of the major problems and needs to be addressed before the floor layer begins. On the one hand, this means properly dusted subfloors - cleaning is important so proper adhesion is achieved. On the other hand, the adjacent rooms, their furniture and etc. need to be protected and sealed off. We take pride in using wood floor fitters equipment on the cutting edge of technology that is almost entirely dust free, but still, a minor amount of dust particles will be eventually released, so there is no such thing as being too careful.

Moisture is the major reason for unsuccessful floor installations. It needs to be properly taken care of or you are running the risk of ending up with damaged flooring sooner than you may think. The issue relates to several different things. First, the subfloor must be clean and dry. Second, the flooring itself needs to acclimatise to the local moisture and temperature in your house and third, you need to make sure the pipes are in a good condition. Finally, it is recommended that the temperature is around 18C and the relative humidity 30-60%.

Going for Subfloor Preparation

The subfloor has to be clean, levelled, sound and dry. All debris and dirt should be removed, not only because it create unevenness, but also because it may react with the wood flooring adhesive, leading to deflection and loose flooring. The floor must be flat to industry standards and they provide very specific values.

Underlay is of great importance, especially with floating floor installation, since it helps to obtain even surface and reduce sounds of footsteps. In the case of wooden floors that are generally hard, it is better that a shock-absorbing underlay is installed. Finally, the subfloor must be covered with a damp-proof membrane - it will protect the flooring against moisture.

Doors / Door Frames Trimming

Doors of the rooms where flooring will be installed need to be removed and stored in a safe place until after fitting has been completed. You also need to choose whether to have the flooring installed around the door trim or get the door trim cut after installation of the flooring.

Methods of Wood Floor Installation

Floating

In this type of wood floor installation, typical for engineered wood flooring and laminate floorings, the floors planks can fit / click together directly without gluing or nailing. That type of floor fitting, not bonded directly to the subfloor, allows installation of specific types of underlay - for sound insulation or damp insulation.

Each plank connects to the others through grooves and tongues, much like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. This method allows installation of floors over surfaces that are not and for some reason, cannot be made perfectly flat.

Using Quality Wood Floor Adhesives

Gluing down with a professional wood floor adhesive can sometimes be the only way of installing wooden flooring. This will be when installing wood floors on concrete or onto subfloors with possibility of running pipes below. To be on the safe side we have to go for installation with wood floor adhesives. This method is appropriate as well for parquet floor fitting or deco / pattern floorings.

Nailing-Down

The name says it all. Nailing gives you a deck-like style floor. Generally speaking, whether you opt for a glued or nailed floor is a matter of personal preference, except for the rare cases when the wood type requires nailing rather than gluing. Using nails to fasten down the flooring is advisable in the case of hardwood with thickness of about 3/4 of an inch.

Getting the flooring stapled down in place is just another type of nailing. The advantage of having your floor stapled down is the easier and much quicker, vastly preferred process. Please see our Flooring types and how to choose? Section to see what floor materials we can offer and fit for you.
